Fernando Mastrangelo is an artist and designer known for sculptural objects and conceptual design shaped by ecological concern, cultural metaphor, and a reverence for the natural world. His works are hand-built from natural and repurposed materials — sand, salt, silica, and powdered glass — bridging organic form and biomorphic minimalism in objects that are at once sculptural and functional.

Born in the United States to parents of Uruguayan descent, Fernando spent his formative years in Monterrey, Mexico, and Buenos Aires, Argentina. He received his M.F.A. in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University (2004) and his B.F.A. from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle (2002). He moved to New York to work under artist Matthew Barney, before establishing himself as an independent sculptor in 2006.

For nearly a decade, Mastrangelo worked within the contemporary art world, exhibiting extensively throughout the United States and internationally in both group and solo exhibitions. In 2014, he debuted his first furniture collection at Sight Unseen OFFSITE, marking his first extension of that sculptural practice into functional form. Two years later, in 2016, he introduced his first fully conceptual collectible design collection — establishing the material language of sand, salt, and glass that continues to define his work today. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.

He has been commissioned by fashion houses including Stella McCartney, Fendi, Dior, and Audemars Piguet — for whom he created the VIP Collectors Lounge at Art Basel, presented in Miami, Basel, and Hong Kong. The artist lives and works in Hudson, New York.

This fall, Mastrangelo debuts Territories, his first major solo exhibition in nearly a decade, with Cristina Grajales Gallery in Tribeca, New York.
